What is Device Tokenization in simple terms?
It is the process of replacing your actual 16-digit card number with a unique digital identifier called a "Token." This token is cryptographically "locked" to your specific device (like your phone) and the PhonePe ecosystem. It ensures your real card details are never shared with or stored by the merchant.
How is Device Tokenization different from Card-on-File Tokenization (CoFT)?
While both replace card numbers with tokens, CoFT is specific to a single merchant (e.g., your card saved on one specific app). Device Tokenization (via PhonePe PG Bolt) is hardware-bound; it allows you to save your card once on the PhonePe app and use it across any merchant that supports Bolt, offering a "Save Once, Use Everywhere" experience with higher security.
Is card tokenization mandatory for my business in India?
According to RBI guidelines, merchants, payment aggregators, and gateways can no longer store raw card data (PAN, Expiry, etc.). While tokenization itself isn't "mandatory" for every single transaction, if you want to offer a "Saved Card" experience for returning customers, tokenization is the only legal and compliant way to do so.
Does Device Tokenization require any changes to my checkout flow?
If you use the PhonePe PG Magento Plugin, the Bolt (DT) flow is integrated out-of-the-box. For custom checkouts, it requires a simple SDK integration. Once active, the only change for the customer is a one-time consent to tokenize their card, followed by a much faster, one-click experience for all future payments.
